Veterinary medicine is seen by the population as a profession primarily focused on animal health. However, veterinary medicine is one of the areas that integrate the One Health concept, promoting not only animal care but also human health and the environment. Veterinarians actively participate in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), even being cited in Resolution No. 287/1998 of the National Health Council as health professionals; however, their actions within public health are still little known by the population and even by other health professionals. The coexistence between humans and animals favors the spread of transmissible d iseases, causing impacts on collective health and economic losses for both the government and producers. This work aims to list the ways in which veterinarians participate in One Health, as well as highlight their importance for preventive medicine and mai ntaining the well-being of the population. The methodology applied was based on the use of the Boolean operators "Veterinarian and SUS" and "Veterinarian and One Health" in the Scielo and Google Scholar databases, selecting articles produced in the last ten years. Among the data found, the importance of the veterinarian in food inspection, sanitary and epidemiological surveillance, and quality control of products of animal origin was verified, ensuring that the population consumes safe and disease-free food. The literature also revealed the importance of the professional in actions aimed at disease prevention and control, environmental management, and research related to public health. Among the main areas of activity of this professional, the extensive knowledge of zoonoses stands out, considered one of the biggest public health problems today. In conclusion, the relevance of the veterinary professional in promoting and ensuring collective health and disease prophylaxis is highlighted, strengthening their ro le in the SUS and One Health.Publicado
